This map has been compiled by the University of Maryland Institute for Population Research (UMIR) based on data from the World Bank.
It shows that the United States has the most murders per capita per 100,000 people, followed by Russia, China, Japan, and Germany.
Russia and China have the lowest murder rates, at just under one per 100 million people.
The U.S. also has the lowest rate of infant mortality, which is lower than in most developed nations.
The map below is an interactive version of the map, which can be viewed on the UMIR website or on the University’s website.
