The United States was once one of the world’s most homogenous societies, and it remains so today.
However, the country is still plagued by racial tensions, and in recent years there have been more incidents of white supremacist violence than in recent decades.
Here are the 10 most racially-charged episodes of the past five years, in chronological order: January 11, 2018: Five people were killed and five others wounded when a car plowed into a crowd of anti-racism protesters outside a Donald Trump rally in Berkeley, California.
The driver, 32-year-old Michael Slager, was charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The FBI said Slager used a .45-caliber handgun to kill a man and his daughter.
The man who died was named by the Associated Press as Heather Heyer, a 26-year old woman from the Virginia city of Charlottesville.
She was killed when the car rammed into a group of people marching for a woman’s right to vote.
A week later, the deadly shooting of five African American churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, was caught on video and circulated widely on social media.
Trump, the GOP nominee, immediately condemned the violence.
January 20, 2018 (Friday): A man wearing a mask with a swastika and holding a Confederate flag was shot dead by police outside a church in South Carolina.
A man in a mask and armed with a shotgun shot and killed a man outside the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, before turning the gun on himself.
Police said they were called to the church by a church member who said he heard shots.
It was not immediately clear whether the man who fired the fatal shot had any connection to the suspect.
The suspect was arrested, and authorities said the suspect had been a follower of white nationalist leader David Duke.
The next day, an African American man was shot to death by police after he allegedly threw a brick at officers.
On January 22, a white man allegedly assaulted a Black man at a downtown Minneapolis bar.
On that day, Minnesota Gov.
Mark Dayton said police were investigating the attack.
January 29, 2018 – A white woman was killed and two others wounded by a white supremacist who was trying to break into her home in Portland, Oregon.
The shooter reportedly tried to break through a window to the home and entered through a garage door.
He then allegedly stabbed the woman multiple times in the back and chest before shooting her multiple times.
The shooting was caught by surveillance cameras and released on YouTube.
February 3, 2018 : Three people were wounded and two people died when a white gunman opened fire at a Black church in Charleston.
The incident was caught in a viral video of the shooter, identified as Dylann Roof, who was arrested the following day and was later convicted of murder and other charges.
On February 9, a man who allegedly tried to rob the same church was arrested in connection with the shooting.
He was later identified as Matthew Shepard, an American Shepard University student who was killed in 1998 by a man named George Robert Brown.
He had attended the same school as his former roommate, Emanuel James Byrd Jr., who is serving life in prison for murder.
February 14, 2018; A white man was arrested after he stabbed two men to death at a Jewish community center in Maryland.
The gunman, identified only as Aaron Lee Harper, is a convicted felon and an associate of a hate group.
Harper, 24, killed Michael David Harris and wounded a woman and two other people, then fled the scene.
He reportedly told police he had been trying to “kill Jews.”
Harper is also believed to have been inspired by an online manifesto published by an unknown white supremacist group, which called for a “bloodbath in the White House.”
Harper has been arrested three times for violent acts, according to the Baltimore Sun.
February 21, 2018.
A white supremacist shot and wounded three people outside a Black Church in South Dakota after he was confronted by two Black worshippers who called him a “dirty racist.”
The suspect, identified by police as Dwayne Scott Crawford, is accused of opening fire on two men outside the Holy Trinity Church, where two others were in church.
Crawford was arrested at the scene, where he is being held in a mental health facility, according, the Sioux City Herald.
The three victims were identified as Joseph Brown, 46, and his mother, Carol Brown, 61.
Both were shot in the neck and face.
Crawford has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, as well as assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.
He is currently in custody in South Dakotas prison.
February 28, 2018, In Alabama, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army was shot and seriously wounded by two white men after he refused to hand over a pistol.
The suspects, two white people, were found to be armed and a police report states that Crawford was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. A
