A senior White House adviser told reporters Monday that the White House is seeking to “keep out” journalists from covering the “dire” situation facing the Trump administration and that there is a “high level of tension” at the White and the Trump Organization.
“It’s the biggest, dumbest situation that we’ve ever been in,” senior adviser Jared Kushner told reporters.
“I think it’s just like a nuclear-armed country and they have to be ready for it.
I think it’ll be a pretty tense situation, as far as press freedom goes.”
Kushner added that he has spoken to several top White House officials about the situation and that “all are trying to do their best to stay out of it.”
“This is not a normal situation, and I think the president knows that,” he said.
“He has been clear about that.”
But the White Hill aide added that the situation is “far from normal.”
The White House has not responded to questions about whether Kushner has been given the green light to exclude the press from his private events.
But on Friday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the White Houses “strong focus is on protecting press freedom.”
She said she was not aware of any White House official being told that the Trump team wanted to “ban reporters from all White House events.”
But on Sunday, CNN reported that White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus told reporters that he and Trump have “very close working relationships” and “that’s why we’ve been able to stay in touch with them so much.”
Priebus added that “the president does not want to have press conferences with reporters.”
A spokesman for the White house press office said the president does have “some interactions” with reporters, but added that there are “rules” he has in place for interactions with the press and that he’s not in any way trying to interfere with the media.
Trump also said Monday that he will be “re-elected” on Tuesday in a landslide victory, but said he was not happy about the news of the Whitehouse’s decision to bar the press.
“The people who are reporting on this stuff should be allowed to do so, I think that’s the way we have it,” Trump said at a press conference.
“We’re going to win again.
We’re going have an enormous landslide.
I’m going to make America great again.”
